The COVID-19 outbreak and cancellation of in-school programming across British Columbia threatens social and academic continuity as well as poses an immense challenge to educators, parents, and guardians.
As students ourselves, with a deep appreciation for education and a belief in the power of youth supporting youth, we were inspired to use our skills, resources, and relationships to play our small part in this crisis. This is our response.
Collaborative-Video Individualized Development Student Support Network (Co-VID SSN) Ltd. is a community-based volunteer organization that connects university student "Peer Supporters" with K-12 students to help ease the burden on parents and educators in Victoria during the social-distancing requirements arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Peer Supporters are paired with K-12 students via Zoom to support the SOUL (Socio-emotional; Organizational; University-Preparedness; Learning) of educational needs amid these challenging circumstances. Through our “Reduce, E-use, We-cycle” model, we ask that all families in a financial position to do so contribute a small donation per session to The Victoria Rapid Relief Fund.
To learn more about our story, see our feature by The Times Colonist.
Our goal is to help reduce:
1) The inevitable challenges associated with (K-12) distance learning and social distancing.
2) Feelings of not knowing how to help in a time where there is such extensive need.
3) Obligations of working parents/guardians to occupy and provide educational support to their children as well as resulting parent-child conflicts.
4) Educational disparities that may emerge due to inequitable learning conditions.
By means of technology, namely, Google Sheets, Google Forms, and Zoom, we connect skilled, compassionate university students with K-12 learners who can help support the SOUL of educational needs amid these challenging circumstances.

Our model draws upon community resource-stores (i.e. university students) and replenishes the Greater Victoria and Saanich community through sharing knowledge, gathering donations for The Victoria Rapid Relief Fund, and forming community connections. We ask that, as compensation for our time, all families in a financial position to do so donate $1-$5 per group session or $5-$10 per individual session to the fund. Through this donation, volunteers know that their impact extends beyond the students they are working with, helping to combat food insecurity and address pressing needs within the wider community.
